Bill Curry was named the first head coach of Georgia State football on June 12, 2008. Coach Curry has spent the last two years developing and directing the program in every area and will lead the Panthers on the field as they play their inaugural season in 2010.

 

Coach Curry played for Coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech from 1962-64 and was the team captain in 1964. Curry went on to play center in the NFL for 10 years with the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts, Houston Oilers, and Los Angeles Rams. During his NFL career he played in three Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls and served as president of the NFL Players Association.

 

Curry began his coaching career at Georgia Tech in 1976 and then served three years as an assistant coach of the Green Bay Packers. He was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 1980-1986. His 1985 team went 9-2-1 and was the ACC runner-up. Coach Curry then went to the University of Alabama where he compiled a 26-10 record in three years. Curry’s 1989 team won the SEC Championship and played in the Sugar Bowl.

 

From Alabama, Curry went to Kentucky for 7 years. In 1997, Curry left coaching and became a college football analyst for ESPN. Curry was with ESPN up until the time he accepted the Georgia State position.

 

Coach Curry won both the ACC and SEC Coach of the Year Award during his coaching career and was selected the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year in 1989. Curry is a member of the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Coach Curry is married to the former Carolyn Newton of Atlanta. They have two children and five grandchildren.
