David Housel served as Auburn University’s Director of Athletics from April 1994 until his retirement in January 2005. During Housel’s tenure as Athletic Director, Auburn won 32 overall or divisional SEC titles and seven national titles and experienced one of its greatest periods of facility enhancement in its history.

Housel spent his entire professional career at Auburn. He worked in the athletic department ticket office from 1970-72 before teaching Journalism at Auburn from 1972-80. He became assistant sports information director in 1980 and then was named sports information director in 1981 and assistant athletic director in 1985.

The Gordo, Alabama native is married to the former Susan McIntosh. Housel was honored by Auburn University for his many years of service in 2005 when the press box at Jordan-Hare Stadium was officially named the David E. Housel Press Box.
