Danny Ford served as the head football coach at Clemson University from 1978 to 1989 and at the University of Arkansas from 1993 to 1997, compiling a 122-59-5 record. Coach Ford’s 1981 Clemson team completed a 12-0 season with a win in the Orange Bowl and was named the consensus national champion.
Coach Ford played at the University of Alabama from 1967-1969 under coach Paul “Bear” Bryant was an All-SEC selection. Ford went on to serve as an assistant for one year at Alabama and then three years at Virginia Tech before joining Charley Pell’s Clemson staff in 1977. When Pell left after the 1978 season to go to Florida, Ford was named head coach at Clemson. Coach Ford’s first game at Clemson was the 1978 Gator Bowl which is most remembered for being the game where legendary Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes punched a Clemson player that led to his firing the next day.
Coach Ford is a native of Gadsden, Alabama and has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Alabama. Coach Ford and his wife, Deborah, have four children and reside just outside of Clemson, South Carolina.
